Juan Dela Cruz was initially exposed to public service when he was 13 years old. Mayor Juan Senior his father, was later elected as an Assemblyman representing Misamis Oriental.
He became interested in political science after being raised by his father, a lawyer and devoted public servant, and enrolled at the Xavier University in Cgayan de Oro City, where he eventually ran and won a position as a university councilor in the student council. Then, motivated by his father's illustrious legal career, student Mayor opted to pursue a law degree at the Ateneo de Davao, where he received a Silver Medal and a Second Honorable Mention. In 1988, he was admitted to the Philippine Bar.
Juan Dela Cruz Sr. beliefs, principles, and commitment to public service further influenced the young Juan to follow in his father's footsteps. It was not difficult for him to settle on a lifetime advocacy and career in public service after witnessing his father consult, meet, and work with individuals from many areas of life.
