Comelec asks BARMM parties, sectoral groups to re-register

MANILA – The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has called on political parties and sectoral organizations in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) seeking to participate in this year’s Bangsamoro Parliamentary Elections to re-register.

George Garcia, chairperson of the Commission on Elections, said all groups — including the 20 accredited Regional Parliamentary Political Parties (RPPP) and 191 Parliamentary Sectoral Organizations (PSO) — must register again after Bangsamoro Autonomy Act No. 88 nullified their earlier accreditations.

"Take note that all of your accreditations have been disregarded. Thus, the Comelec will now once again accept petitions to be accredited as a Sectoral Organization or as a Political Party," Garcia said in an interview Thursday.

He added that the poll body plans to reopen the accreditation period next week.

He said new applicants, as well as groups whose previous applications were denied, may also apply for accreditation.

Under the proposed schedule, Regional Parliamentary Political Parties with at least 5,000 registered BARMM voters may file their applications tentatively from March 17 to 20 before the Bangsamoro Registration and Accreditation Committee.

Applicants are required to submit a Verified Petition for Registration, while previously accredited political parties must file a Verified Manifestation instead of a Petition for Registration.

Meanwhile, Parliamentary Sectoral Organizations may submit their applications before the Bangsamoro Registration and Accreditation Committee from March 16 to 23, including the names of their three nominees.

Previously denied and new PSOs are required to file a Verified Petition for Registration, while formerly accredited organizations must submit a Verified Manifestation in Lieu of Petition for Registration. (PNA)
