Incumbent village officials on 3rd term not eligible for BSKE 2026

MANILA – The Commission on Elections (Comelec) reminded incumbent village officials who are serving their third consecutive terms are no longer allowed to participate in the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) slated Nov. 2.

The poll body said the three-term limit is provided under Republic Act No. 12232 (An Act Setting the Term of Office of Barangay Officials and Members of the Sangguniang Kabataan).

"Incumbent elective barangay officials serving their third consecutive term in the same position shall not be eligible to run for the same position in the November 2026 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections," read Comelec Resolution No. 11207.

"No elective barangay official shall serve for more than three consecutive terms in the same position."

Incumbent SK officials elected in 2023 are still allowed to seek reelection as the transitory provisions of the law do not cover incumbent youth officials. The new four-year term law applies to the 2026 electoral cycle.

Filing of certificates of candidacy for the BSKE will be held Sept. 28 to Oct. 5. (PNA)
