More big names in politics file COCs

MANILA – More big names in politics on Thursday filed their certificates of candidacy (COCs) on the penultimate day of the COC filing for the 2022 national and local elections.

Former presidential candidate Gilbert Teodoro has joined the growing list of aspirants for senator after filing COC at the Sofitel Harbor Tent in Pasay City.

The former defense secretary, however, did not personally submit his COC, but by a representative, since he is still in quarantine after testing positive for coronavirus disease (Covid-19).

Teodoro, who lost in the 2010 presidential race, is running under the People's Reform Party.

"My friends, heeding your valuable advice, I filed my COC for Senator under the PRP," he said in a message. “I am especially grateful to all those who had faith in me throughout the years.”

Former House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano also filed his COC for senator as an independent candidate.

He served as senator from 2007 to 2017 before running for representative of Taguig–Pateros's 1st district in the May 2019 polls.

Vice President Leni Robredo also filed her COC for president, moments after she announced her presidential bid.

She is running as an independent candidate.

Meanwhile, the Commission on Election (Comelec) said a total of 16 COCs for president, seven for vice president, and 28 for senators were filed on the seventh day of the COC filing period.

It added 67 certificates of nomination and acceptance (CONAs) and list of nominees were also filed by party-list groups.

Since the start of the filing period last October 1, there are already 57 aspirants for president, 16 for vice president, and 92 for senators.

A total of 194 organizations are looking to join the May 2022 polls. (PNA)
