Public warned vs. fake socmed accounts of Comelec execs

MANILA – The Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Thursday cautioned the public against fake accounts and profiles, on various social media (socmed) platforms, impersonating officials of the poll body.

In a statement, Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez urged the people not to accept any requests from persons posing as commissioners and other poll body officials on their social media accounts.

“Any Facebook friend request purporting to be coming from a Comelec Commissioner or other key officials of the poll body should not be accepted, but instead immediately reported for community standards violations," he added.

He also urged Twitter users to report profiles impersonating key officials of the commission "for violation of the platform's impersonation policy."

Jimenez also warned legal action against those involved in these unscrupulous activities.

"These blatant attempts to steal the online identity of Comelec officials are potentially part of a broader attempt to undermine the integrity of the elections. Apart from closely coordinating with social media platforms to take down these profiles and accounts, the Comelec stands ready to take legal action against the perpetrators," the poll body spokesperson added.

Jimenez, however, did not identify the commissioners and key officials whose names are being used by those behind these illegal acts. (PNA)
